Designing a flyer. Seven rules that work.

A flyer has a few seconds to convince – in the letterbox, on the counter or in someone’s hand. These seven rules decide whether it gets read or thrown away.

1. One message per flyer

What should happen after someone has read your flyer? Book an appointment, drop by, call? Decide on one thing. A flyer that tries to say everything ends up saying nothing.

2. The headline carries it

The headline is often the only thing that gets read. It should name the benefit, not just the company name: “New heating in three days” is stronger than the business name alone. Your name is still on it – just not first.

3. A clear hierarchy

Headline, image, short text, action – the eye should travel in that order. Big differences in type size and weight help. If everything is the same size, nothing is important.

4. Less text

Bullet points instead of paragraphs, short sentences instead of long explanations. Everything else belongs on your website – the flyer sparks curiosity, the website explains.

5. One strong image instead of many small ones

A good photo or a clear graphic works better than a collage of six images. Choose the subject that shows your offer at a glance – and use your own images instead of random stock photos.

6. Action and contact, impossible to miss

Say clearly what the next step is, and make it easy: phone number, address, opening hours – and a QR code that leads straight to appointment booking or the offer. Say what’s behind the code, and don’t print it too small.

7. Choose the right format and paper

DL fits into any envelope, A6 into any pocket, A5 offers room for more. Paper and finish shape the impression before a word is read: a flyer on firm, pleasant paper is less often put straight down.

Checklist before printing

  • Bleed and margin: extend backgrounds beyond the edge as specified by the printer. Place important content at a distance from the trim edge.
  • Colours: create print files in the printer’s colour mode, usually CMYK.
  • Images: in sufficient resolution for the final size, usually 300 dpi.
  • Proofreading: have a second person read the text – especially phone number, address and prices.
  • QR code: test with several smartphones before printing.

The flyer within your overall presence

A flyer works best when it looks like the rest of your presence: the same colours, the same typeface, the same language as on your website and business card. How such a system is created is covered in the article Corporate design.

  • Branding

    Having a logo designed

A logo doesn’t have to tell everything about your business. It has to be recognised – on the company van as much as in your Instagram profile picture. Here’s how a good logo project works.

  • Website

How much does a website cost?

You’ll hear everything from “you can do it for free” to “five figures”. Here’s what the price really depends on, which costs come later – and what you pay with us.

Sounds good? Then let’s talk.
