The short answer
A website costs as much as it needs to achieve. An online business card with services, opening hours and contact details is quicker to build than a site with twenty pages, appointment booking and three languages. So the price depends less on the technology than on the scope – and on how much needs to be clarified beforehand.
The deciding question is a different one: does the website bring you enquiries, and can you keep it up to date without outside help? A cheap site that nobody finds ends up being the most expensive.
What the price depends on
- Scope. A one-pager with all the key information on a single page is manageable. Every additional page – for each service or each location, say – needs copy, images and design.
- Copy and images. Will you supply text and photos yourself, or should they be created? Good copy and your own images often make the biggest difference, both in the result and in the price.
- Design. Adapting a template or designing a presence that unmistakably belongs to your brand – both are possible, but not equally involved.
- Features. Appointment booking, an online shop, several languages or a connection to software you already use.
- Maintenance. Who will change opening hours, prices and images later – you or us? That determines how the website is built technically.
Costs that come on top
Besides the one-off price, there are running costs: for the domain, for hosting and, where needed, for tools such as appointment booking. These amounts are usually modest, but they should be in the quote from the start. Ask what is included and what isn’t.
Time costs money too – your own. A website for which you spend weeks writing copy and hunting for photos is only cheap on the surface.
Website builder or professional?
A website builder is cheap per month. But design, copy, images and technology are then down to you. That’s worth it if you have the time, a good eye and enjoy it.
A professional costs more once but takes the work off your hands. You get a presence that suits your brand, works on smartphones, loads fast and is cleanly built for search engines. For most businesses, that’s the shorter route to more enquiries.

How to get comparable quotes
Quotes can only be compared if every provider knows the same things. Clarify beforehand:
- Goal: What should the website achieve – calls, bookings, job applications?
- Content: Which pages do you need, and who supplies copy and images?
- Features: Appointment booking, form, shop, several languages?
- Examples: Which websites do you like, which not – and why?
- Framework: What budget is realistic, and when should the site go live?
Also ask every provider: what’s included in the price? Who owns the website afterwards? And what does a change cost if you don’t want to make it yourself? Anyone who answers clearly will also work clearly on the project.
